Protective Effects of Phycocyanin on Galactosamine-induced Hepatitis in Rats

چکیده
This study was performed to determine the potential hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of the microalgae pigment phycocyanin in galactosamine-induced acute liver damage in rats. Phycocyanin (50-200 mg kg i.p) was administered one hour before the galactosamine (600 mg kg i.p) and the blood was extracted 24 hours later to determine alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the serum. The livers were removed to evaluate damage using optic and electron microscopy. Phycocyanin reduced ALT and AST activities as well as MDA concentrations in the serum. It also decreased necrosis and inflammation in the liver compared to the controls treated only with galactosamine. These results indicate that phycocyanin exerts hepatoprotective and antiinflammatory effects in this human hepatitis animal model.

Protective Effect of Spirulina and Phycocyanin on Testicular Tissue and Sperm Parameters in Adult Rats Treated with Hydrogen Peroxide
Background and purpose: About 50% of infertility in couples is related to male factors and oxidative stress is one of the main causes of infertility in men. Hydrogen peroxide has an adverse effect on male reproductive system due to its free radicals. Spirulina and phycocyanin are known to have antioxidant properties and can modify stressors. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, ...
متن کاملHepatobiliary clearance of labelled mebrofenin in normal and D-galactosamine HCl-induced hepatitis rats and the protective effect of turmeric extract.
This study was carried out to see the hepatobiliary clearance of 99m Tc-Mebrofenin radiopharmaceutical in D-galactosamine induced hepatic rats. Furthermore, protective effect of turmeric extract has been studied in these hepatitis rats. Hepatitis was induced with intraperitoneal injection of D-galactosamine (400 mg/kg b. wt) in these rats. 1% turmeric extract was given along with their normal d...
متن کاملSuppressive effect of modified arabinoxylan from rice bran (MGN-3) on D-galactosamine-induced IL-18 expression and hepatitis in rats.
We investigated in this study the effect of modified arabinoxylan from rice bran (MGN-3) and its fractions on D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced IL-18 expression and hepatitis in rats. Male Wistar rats were pretreated with MGN-3 or fractions of the MGN-3 hydrolysate, or with saline 1 h before administering D-GalN (400 mg/kg B.W.). The serum transaminase activities, IL-18 mRNA expression level in ...
متن کاملFK 506 modulates D-galactosamine-induced hepatitis in rats.
THE immunosuppressive agent FK 506 has been investigated for its adverse effects on the liver, kidney, and the pancreas. I FK 506, however, has multiple biological effects which may be beneficial for the liver. For instance, pretreatment of rats with FK 506 has been shown to both protect the liver from ischemic injury2 and to ameliorate the hepatic injury associated with ischemia and reperfusio...
متن کاملEffects of mild zinc deficiency, plus or minus an acute-phase response, on galactosamine-induced hepatitis in rats.
Zn deficiency is hypothesized to produce poor resistance to injury involving oxidative stress. This could occur by impairing Zn antioxidant function(s) or by indirectly limiting adaptive protective mechanisms such as a rise in acute-phase proteins. The present study examined rats fed diets adequate or moderately low in Zn (4 or 25 micrograms/g diet) for 9 d. The lower intake produced a mild Zn ...
